The minimum wage in Jamaica as of March 1, 2016 is $6,200 for a 40-hour work week. At the exchange rate of US$121.20 to JMD$1, this figure amounts to US$51.15. Under the law, all persons employed in Jamaica should not be paid less than the amount stipulated as minimum wage which is JMD$155 per hour or USD$1.28 per hour. It is however, a guideline for employers, and companies which can afford to pay more are encouraged to strive to match salaries in their respective industries. Every few years, the minimum wage in Jamaica is reviewed and decided by a committee of the Ministry of Labour.
Compliance with Jamaica’s minimum wage is monitored by the Pay and Conditions of Employment Branch (P.C.E.B.) of the Ministry of Labour, with Labour Officers empowered to visit places of employment to ensure the law is being followed.
The P.C.E.B. also provides a customer and advisory service for employed persons to make complaints regarding their employment or termination and to employers on the requirement of the Law in dealing with workers’ entitlements and conditions of services.
In addition to monitoring minimum wage, the P.C.E.B. has responsibility to ensure that all workers receive vacation and sick leave entitlements, and that workers who are made redundant are adequately compensated as provided for by the Employment (Termination and Redundancy Payments) Act & Regulation.
In 2014, the Flexi Work Week was passed into law. The Employment (Flexible Work Arrangements) (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act allows employees to arrange flexible working hours with their employers. Under the new law, there will be no set eight hour work day. Instead, employees can arrange to work any combination of hours/day for a 40-day work week up to a maximum of 12 hours. With the compressed work week, workers can observe their religious day of worship without any fear of reprisal.
