- Under new Flexi-Work Regulations, you may work up to a maximum of 12 hours in any 24-hour period. The 40-hour work week may be spread over all seven days, however overtime payment begins after you have worked a full 40 hours not including breaks/lunch time.
- You cannot be forced to work overtime hours unless you had entered into a previous arrangement with your employer to do so.
- You are entitled to a minimum of two weeks vacation leave each year if you have been employed with the business for less than 10 years. This leave entitlement increases to three weeks after 10 years of service.
- Your employer has no obligation to carry forward vacation leave earned but not taken. However, if the company allows it, vacation leave may be carried forward up to three years. If leave carry forward is not allowed, the employer must ensure that the leave can be utilized within a reasonable time.
- If you are terminated, the employer is bound by law to either give two weeks notice or pay in lieu of notice. If there is unused vacation leave at the time of termination, you must receive payment for vacation leave that is equal to the salary rate at the time of the dismissal. You are also entitled to all outstanding vacation leave pay if you were the one to terminate the contract.
- All salary, wages, leave pay, overtime, bonuses, benefits and other forms of compensation (unless exempt) are subject to be taxed and must be paid either by statutory deduction or voluntary payments to the tax collectorate in the case of self-employed individuals.
- Statutory deductions include PAYE (Pay As You Earn), NHT (National Housing Trust), NIS (National Insurance Scheme), Education Tax and HEART. Any other deductions from your salary must be based on an agreement between your employer and you.
