Getting around in Jamaica is fairly easy though it can be quite an adventure, particularly in rural parishes.
Licenced buses and taxis operate in every parish transporting people to and from communities and towns in Jamaica.
Buses connect passengers travelling inter parish between major towns, for example between Montego Bay, St. James and Ocho Rios, St. Ann. The bus will usually stop to let off and pick up passengers along the way. Travel to the parish interiors and smaller communities are usually facilitated by route taxis.
For deep rural areas, or where roads are not quite suitable for motor vehicles, local entrepreneurs will offer a ‘bike taxi’ into their community.
In the Kingston Metropolitan area, which covers the parishes of Kingston, St. Andrew, and St. Catherine, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) runs a more organized bus service with scheduled buses along established routes. However, travel time on these 60 seater buses require some amount of patience. Chartered taxis, though much more expensive, are easily available if faster travel time is necessary.
Public passenger vehicles (PPV) bear red licence plates and should clearly state the route the vehicle is authorized to travel. Fares are established by a local regulatory body known as the Transport Authority of Jamaica. However, as in any country, it is not uncommon for an unfamiliar tourist to be overcharged. Find out and agree on the fare being taking any form of transportation in Jamaica.
