Travel Tips: Getting Flights to Jamaica

As the hub of the Caribbean, it is quite easy to get flights to Jamaica. Many top airlines have scheduled daily flights from major cities around the world to Montego Bay through the Sangster International Airport, as well as to the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.

American Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest, Delta, Spirit and US Airways fly from various cities in the United States. For travel to Jamaica from Canada, West Jet and Air Canada also have regularly scheduled flights. British Airways is the main carrier that connects visitors from the UK, along with Virgin Atlantic. Flights to Jamaica from other parts of Europe usually take the form of chartered weekly flights on airlines like ThomsonĀ and Thomas Cook.

From South America, Copa Airlines flies out of Panama to Kingston. Caribbean Airlines also connects the Caribbean to Latin America, as is the main carrier between Jamaica and the rest of the region, in addition to flights to and from the US.

Many travel sites like Hotwire, Travelocity and Expedia and even the airlines themselves offer frequent deals on flights to Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean. However, when planning your vacation, a general rule is that the colder it gets up north, the higher the fares will be to travel to warm, sunny Jamaica. The best deals on flights are usually available in the summer when fares are generally lower than in the cooler months.

Bear these tips in mind:

  • When travelling to Jamaica, remember that you are visiting a warm climate. There’s no winter time here, though there are odd days when the weather might drop below 80 degrees. Pack summer clothes, bring sunglasses and of course, sunscreen. However, as in any tropical climate, you could encounter mosquitoes so it wouldn’t hurt to take along an insect repellent.
  • In 2013, the Jamaican government instituted a ban on cigarette smoking in public places. Be sure to check with your hotel or tour guide before you light up. Marijuana or ganja smoking is against the law and is strictly enforced!
  • Use common sense and take precautionary steps for your own safety. Jamaica is a small country but like many parts of the world, it is foolhardy to openly flash cash and valuables. Plan ahead before going on outings or visiting attractions and bring only what you need. Ensure that your valuables are locked away safely while you’re having fun.
