Jamaica is famous the world over for many things - Bob Marley, Reggae music, Blue Mountain coffee and lately, our athletic prowess.
But many tourists limit their Jamaican vacation to the distance from their hotel room to the beach, leaving the island without knowing the culture and history Bob Marley sang about.
There's much more to this beautiful island than sun, sand and sea. If you truly want to experience the real Jamaica, there are three things you simply must do during your visit.
1. Eat Jamaican food.
There’s no better way to experience a new culture than to get a taste of the food. Jamaican food has a wide variety of exotic flavours that will send your taste buds into overdrive. From spicy jerk and a delicious spin on patties, to the national dish of ackee and saltfish you’re sure to find something to please the palate. Plus, the tropical climate means an abundance of exotic fruits are available throughout the year. Jamaicans love food and almost every month there’s a food celebration somewhere, whether its jerk, seafood or a cultural mix of dishes. A good time to explore authentic Jamaican food is during Independence celebrations in August.
2. Attend a music festival.
What better way to experience reggae music than in the land it was created? A music festival is a great way to mingle with Jamaicans from all walks of life and soak in authentic reggae music for a fraction of what it costs elsewhere. Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in January, Reggae Sumfest in July, and Sting in December are just three of many events held annually.
3. Talk to an actual Jamaican.
And not just your hotel waiter. The goal is to find out something about Jamaica you didn’t know before, like what exactly is 'jerk' cooking or how did Rastafarianism come about. Use the conversation to expand on the information from the hotel brochures. Your new found knowledge will add to the discussion when showing off your vacay pics to family and friends.
